Harold Frontz is a versatile painter with an aptitude
for all facets of landscape and still life painting, but
he is particularly drawn toward maritime subjects.
Traditional fishing and sailing boats are especially
appealing to the artist, and he lavishes the same
combination of craftsmanship and creativity on his
paintings as shipbuilders do on their vessels.  His
marine paintings are clearly authentic but are not
mere ship portraits.  Harold responds to the graceful
shapes of the boats, their elegant movement through
the water, and their pivotal role in the seagoing
community.  He portrays these qualities with an
impressionist style that showcases his dexterity with
brush and paint.  The apparent spontaneity of his art
is possible because he has dedicated himself to
mastering the control of both watercolor and oil
techniques.

The artist has been strongly influenced by artists of
the Massachusetts Cape Ann School, and he studied
with Gloucester artist Charles Movalli.  However, his
interest in maritime subjects encompasses harbors
and boatyards worldwide.  He received instruction at
the Mounts Bay Art Centre in England, doing plein-air
paintings of Cornish fishing villages.  Other
instructors have included Ted Goerschner and Tony
Couch.

His earliest encounters with boats were inland,
setting fishing lines with his father on streams and
creeks.  As a young man, he built a small sailboat.
Today his shipbuilding is limited to a smaller scale.  In
addition to painting, Harold constructs ship models
as a means of better appreciating the form and
function of various types of watercraft.

Harold is an “Artist Member” of the American Society
of Marine Artists and a “Professional Member” of the
International Society of Marine Painters.  He has
exhibited in numerous national juried shows and
teaches workshops as his schedule permits.  He has
a doctorate in counseling and has worked for over 25
years as a mental health administrator.
